A war game and grand strategy in one. Strategy and Tactics: WW2 is a mobile game that will invoke memories of classic PC strategy games set during World War 2.
In the style of the best 4X PC games, you get to lead a nation (from a small state to a superpower) and carry it to global supremacy using not only the might of your army but also economy, science, and - in a first for the series - Diplomacy!
Task
Analyze the existing main screen. Propose solutions to improve usability. Highlight game progression.
My role
User Research, Wireframing and Prototyping, Interaction Design
Process
To tackle this task, I immersed myself in the game, its context, and primary user flows. I conducted interviews with active players to gain direct insights. A reference board was compiled, and I performed a comparative study of similar games. I also applied heuristic analysis to evaluate the interface systematically. Using the gathered data, I formulated hypotheses about potential improvements.

These formed the basis for creating wireframes and mockups, which I then handed over to the development team for implementation.

UI Improvements:
- The main screen now features visually appealing nation leaders and adjutants as the central focus. These characters greet players upon entry and visually represent progression through their changes, enhancing the user experience and sense of achievement.
- League progression has been made more prominent with a new progress bar and a dynamic league symbol on the main screen. This provides clear, engaging visualization of the player's advancement, making the progression system more motivating and immediately visible.
- The mail feature has been moved to a secondary position, streamlining the main screen layout while maintaining accessibility.
- The store button has been redesigned with a more recognizable icon and changed from red to a more appealing green color. It's been relocated to the bottom panel, considering the existing quick access via currency controls in the top panel, for a for a dedicated entry point.
- For ongoing sessions, the start button now displays the current turn number and country flag, providing immediate context and facilitating easy re-entry into the game.
- The background can also be changed, for example, to match seasonal events or sales.
